Thought of the Day
Radio Bristol

Hello everyone.

I went up to Lancashire last week to a funeral. It was a Quaker ceremony and we all met to remember a remarkable life. He had been a craftsman, a woodworker and cabinet maker. He loved creating things for people and gave much pleasure. He was a man of principle who quietly reflected his beliefs by the way he lived and encouraged others - always a kind word. He used to walk several miles every Sunday for worship. He was a familiar figure to many as he passed on his way - part of the rhythm of life in that community. He had died suddenly, aged 97. The occasion was very sad - but full of good memories, and respect, and bringing people together in re-union.

The service was based around silence. We were invited to sit, and reflect, and by being together in God's presence we entered into a communion of prayer - bringing to mind the person we loved. If someone was moved they could say a few words. Everyone was involved and it was a good time - the winter sun shining through the windows of the meeting house.

These bible words were spoken - "the Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to Save, He will take great delight in you. He will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." We continued in silence - those words telling the "certainty of hope in the mystery of God." The occasion was a celebration, as well as a farewell.

As we drove home I was thinking. Those words can speak to all of us. I find it's useful to memorise a phrase like that, or write it on a card, because its not always easy to sit in silence. In our BUSY world the things on our minds can crowd in as soon as we try to make space by stillness. But to read such a phrase over and over, slowly, can be a helpful time of rest, and reminds us that God does not forget us. Here they are again:

"The Lord your God is with you,
He is mighty to Save,
He will take great delight in you.
He will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing."
