*14* Heinrich Ernst Jakob Hilgemann (1814-1864)
Short description Heinrich Ernst Jakob Hilgemann, born 17 Dec 1814 in Lienen-Höste (near Osnabrück), evangelisch-lutherisch, and died 19 Dec 1864 in Burgsteinfurt (Westfalen), aged 50 Father: Jürgen Heinrich Hilgemann Mother: Anna Maria Elsabein, née Wegmann There is some confusion with this name in the documents. On one page she is called "Anna M. Elsabein Wegmann". On another "Anna Maria" has been crossed out and replaced by Catharina, and the name "Elsabein Wegmann" has been replaced by "Elsabein, née Wegmann". The latter version looks more probable, since Elsabein is not a Christian name - or is it? Link from here to facsimile documents Britta Horz surmises as follows: Presumably this woman was a widow, called Elsabein, née Wegmann. Then she married Jürgen Heinrich Wegmann. When the registrar entered the "maiden name", he was not sure whether to enter the real name at birth or the name before her last marriage. In my practice as Notary Public I write in such cases: née Wegmann, widowed Elsabein. But the forms on the certificates in the Elsabein case do not provide enough space for that. Since there is no comma between Elsabein and Wegmann, it is impossible anyway to say where the Christian names end and the surnames begin. For more on the name 'Elsabein' and 'Elsaben', see file Conradt Hantelmann. It seems that Elsaben and Elsabein are Christian names, no longer in use and therefore not known to Klaus Bung. Klaus Bung applauds this interpretation, but, thinking of the limited space provided on birth certificates, cannot resist the temptation to insert here a true story that came over the radio (BBC Radio 4 today, 17 April 2000). An old man, born in Burnley, Lancashire, in a dynasty of football fans, supporters of Burnley for generations, was given as "Christian names" the surnames of all members of the Burnley football team in 1925. Now he has revealed to his incredulous family that, from the age of 8, he has been a secret supporter of Blackburn Rovers. He did not want to die with the sin of lying on his conscience. A terrible row has broken out in the outraged family. The old man, however, out of sheer spite, has now changed his name by deed poll and added the 11 names of the Blackburn Rover team of April 2000 to his name. Marriage: Heinrich Ernst Jakob Hilgemann, occupation: "Lehrer und Cantor" (Teacher, Organist and Choir Master; same combination of duties as Lehrer Lämpel in "Max und Moritz") married Friederike Esselbrügge on 5 Oct 1841 in Burgsteinfurt.
