Lebenslauf

What can we learn from it.

1 This is a draft, that's why CF retained a copy and why it is not signed. It is not quite finished, but he is at the Mining Academy when he is writing this; he has just started. Occasionally words have been crossed out

2 This is most probably Christian Faßbender. He gives his date of birth as 6 Oct 1811; whereas the Ahnenpaß gives it as 6 Oct 1808.

3 We learn the occupation of his father: teacher

4 We learn that his father died early, so that Christian could only learn reading, writing and arithmetic, i.e. (I guess) before Christian was ten or fourteen years old. So the father's death would be prior to 1821.

5 We learn the places in which CF worked. The localities have to be checked out on maps. Was all this near Horhausen, or did he go further afield, e.g. to Zellerfeld? Where was the mining academy?

More information about Horhausen and its location
Size of village: 200+ inhabitants. The area around it was dotted with mines. Horhausen has a miners' lamp in its coat of arms. Many of the mines mentioned will have been local. Many inhabitants combined mining with small scale farming. The mines produced non-ferrous metals (Buntmetalle).

5 If we assume that CF started work as a miner when he was 14 and perhaps only 10 and add up the years mentioned in his CV, we can estimate when approx. this document was written.

6 In a later document we learn that at the age of 23 he was discharged from the army because of his weak constitution. Miners are supposed to be strong. Did he perhaps ruin his health while working in the mines?

7 CF mentions the 'Königsberger Punallenbruch???'. There was a mine called Königsberger in the area. It is mentioned on the following Internet Site:

http://www.grube-fortuna.de/historie.html

which has a lot of general information about iron ore mining in the Lahn-Dill area, close to Horhausen and should be checked for clarification of terms and conditions.

Also check the following site, which gives general mining information, and mentions a 'Grube Königsberger'

http://www.mining-europe.de/database/weser.htm

8 Chronology (approx.):

1811 Birth

1829 Starts his mining career, aged 18 (older than I thought): Friedrich Milhan, 2 years

1831 Grube Luisa: 1 year

1832 Grube Milhan: 1 year

1833 Grube Georg, Grube Luisa, Königsberger: 3 years in total?

1836

- There was a Georgshütte near Burgsolms.

Notes and queries:

Christian Faßbender is here referred to as Faßbinder. The name means 'cooper', maker of barrels.

Klaus Bung does not know what is a Trainfeldart. Search on the Internet and in military books abou 'Feldart', a term which frequently occurs in connection with the names of a company. I am not sure where it is an abbreviation (to be followed by a fullstop). I think it stands for 'Feld-Artillerie'(field artillery). Could 'Train' have anything to do with 'training', or with 'train' in the sense of Kolonne (see word in document), a column of marching soldiers?

Oranienburg (garrison?) is a town near Berlin. Have I misread this name? The document is issued in Coblenz (now Koblenz), far from Berlin.

Please help to decipher the signatures and remarks at the bottom of the page. Click on 'Printalbe version' to get something easily readable.

Is the word 'Königliche' (royal) correct? Who was the king of Prussia at the time?

What is the 'Landwehr'? I presume it is the civil defence organisation, less demanding than the fighting army, and Christian Faßbender had to serve there, a kind of Ersatzdienst (substitute public service).

The stamp on the bottom left and the words underneath it have to be deciphered. The date is '10 Julij 1831', elevent days after the date of the document, '29 Junij 1831'.

Christian Faßbender was 23 years old at the time.

What is a Park-Kolonne (parking company?)?

Town Acht in der Eifel

What is Achter Artillerie Brigade? In the Eifel mountains near Coblenz is a famous mountain, 'Die Hohe Acht' (High Acht), and the village of Acht. The Hohe Acht can be seen on the map north-west of the village of Acht. Was this village a garrison town? What had to be guarded there?

Klaus Bung and his friend Meinolf Hillebrand once went on a four-week hike in the area (Hunsrück and Eifel) when they were at school in Duisburg together, aged perhaps 16, on foot and with a tent, and sometimes stopping in Youth Hostels.

What is the literal meaning of 'o:' in '17ten April o:', presumably a Latin abbreviation meaning 'of the current year'?
